Project H.O.M.E. Florida by Kathy Peterson Inspired Watch this 5 room makeover on PBS-WXEL on the South Florida Today show!

Hi Everyone!
Kathy Peterson here to show you the bedroom results of Project H.O.M.E. in Florida. And can I just say this was one of the most empowering experiences I've ever had yet one of the biggest challenges having to work with a zero budget, hand-me-down furniture in 5 "very small" rooms and juggling every one's schedule! But believe me----it was soooo worth the effort and time--- even if it did take 3 months to complete.

I was so blessed to work with Maculene, age 20 and Christina, age 19 spending many days together teaching them how to sew, craft, make art, decorate, paint and more. We made all the bed covers, pillows and curtains plus painted and upholstered furniture and painted all the walls, made art and refurbished furniture-------and simply had a marvelous time creating a new look.

The biggest challenge was getting rid of all the clutter, working with a small amount of fabric, keeping things organized in a small space, coordinating schedules and finding hand-me-down furniture that fit the scale of the room. But the result speaks for itself! The small amount of fabric was challenging because we had so much sewing to do in each room but it made me really "get creative" with designing and I think the "patchwork" results are just so fun and cheerful!
I'm so pleased to have been a national coordinator for D.A.N.A.'s Project H.O.M.E. in Florida and to have worked with two incredible young women who stuck with me for 3 months to complete the project and be actively involved in all the decorating endeavors. It was so empowering for me to watch these girls learn new skills and gain more and more confidence every time we worked together.

PBS-WXEL South Florida Today spent an entire afternoon with us this week taping a TV segment that will air on OCTOBER 8th & 10th at 7pm EST. So if you're located in Florida or passing through, please be sure to watch this incredible 5 room makeover reveal!

Washington DC Project H.O.M.E. Project- DONE!

Greetings DANA Members!

This is Sherry B. Ways, Project Coordinator of the Washington, DC Project H.O.M.E! We have crossed the finish line folks! My has it been a wonderful and powerful experience for me. I am so blessed to have a multitude of talent and DEDICATED people around me. I wish to thank the following people for seeing this project TO THE END:

Bill Howard, Artist, Ward 7 Arts Collaborative
Wand Aikens, Executive Director, Ward 7 Arts Collaborative
Audrey White, Unity Health Care Foundation
Naima Hashim, Unity Health Care Foundation
Nika Stewart, Decorators Alliance of North America

Without EGO or fretting over "who is the lead" or dropping out you all showed unselfish dedication to this project we would never have been able to see it through. Though we had some bumps in the road, we saw it through. That is what life is all about, moving through difficulties and roadblocks in a dignified way never being negative but always positive. For that I thank you.

I also want to thank our sponsors:

City Interests
Eco-Green Living
IKEA
Authentic Art Consulting
Thick Art Collaborative

Without you we could not have had a great space!

Well folks, what can I say? The morning of Wednesday, September 17th was full of pomp and circumstance. Our Key Corner Reading room for the Unity East of the River Clinic is finally finished!

The morning was filled with coffee, pasteries, conversation and lots of smiles! A formal program which included top leadership of Unity Health Care rounded out the event.

Dr. Marlene Kelley, MD., Chair of the Board of Unity Health Care made remarks, as well did Vincent Keane, President and Executive Director of Unity Health Care. In addition, remarks were made by Wanda Aikens, Executive Director of the Ward 7 Arts Collaborative, Bill Howard, Muralist and member of the Ward 7 Arts Collaborative, yours truly on behalf of Design Scheme Interiors, LLC and Ms. Nika Stewart, Co-Founder and Executive Director, of the Decorators Alliance of North America, Project H.O.M.E.

Sharon J. Burton of Authentic Art Consulting was in attendance. Authentic Art Consulting along with the Thick Art Collaborative provided reading books, school and art supplies for the children. Tara Shimberg DC DANA member was also in attendance for support.

The media was there- Capitol Community News and ABC Channel 8 affliate here in Washington, DC covered the event during their evening news programming.

NOW, I wish to post Nika Stewart's comments about the event that she sent via email yesterday:

Hi DANA members!

I writing to tell you about my experience
yesterday at the first Project HOME
reveal.

If you've been following Project HOME
on the blog (http://projecthome2008.blogspot.com),
you know that several DANA members have been
busy volunteering their talents to give
back to their communities - and making the
world a better place. Well, yesterday was the
"grand opening" of the new reading corner inside
Unity Health Care's East of the River Health Center
in Washington DC.

The ceremony was lovely. The Unity Health
Care Foundation recognized the incredible
generosity of DANA member Sherry B. Ways,
of Design Scheme Interiors, LLC. Sherry worked
with artists and furniture companies to bring
this beautiful space together. We are so proud
and inspired by you, Sherry!
Television and newspaper press attended the
ribbon cutting to capture the event. The CEO
of Unity publicly thanked all the volunteers,
and I even got to stand up and express my joy
at being there and my appreciation for what
Sherry has done.

But more important than yesterday's festivities
is the lasting impact this is going to have
on DC's underprivileged families. By creating a
comfortable, cheerful space for children to relax,
and by inspiring them to read - by offering them
books in a fun, inspiring atmosphere, this new
reading corner will help children feel good about
reading - and feel great about themselves.
I think that makes the whole world a better
place to live, don't you?

Have a great day!
Nika

The Home Stretch: Washington, DC's Project H.O.M.E.

Greetings! This is Sherry Ways from Washington, DC's Project H.O.M.E. We are now in the final throws of the East of the River Key Corner Project. Since I last posted, The Washington Business Journal recognized our efforts in July under their Good Works Section which discussed Design Scheme Interiors, LLC providing complimentary design services to the Unity East of the River Project!

We gained another sponsor, City Interests, a for profit commercial real estate developer in the District of Columbia, who has invested heavily in the East Washington community. City Interests has made a $1,500 contribution towards furniture and maintenance for the Key Corner. Thank you Todd Lieberman of City Interests for making the contribution happen!

The photos above demonstrate time that Ward 7 Arts Collaborative member and artist, Bill Howard and Black Artists of DC member John Cooper spent painting the mural for the space in July. As you can see the mural took a lot of time and man power getting painted. However, both artists' were pleased with my contribution! Both John and Bill said that they would "hire me anytime" to help paint a mural. I guess they were impressed with my artistic ability (LOL!).

The mural is now complete, furniture is being ordered and we will be picking up the children's furniture from our sponsor IKEA shortly! I along with Ward 7 Arts Collaborative Executive Director, Wanda Aikens, Ward 7 Arts Collaborative Board Chair, Julia Jones and Naima Hashim and Audrey White of Unity Health Care met yesterday to discuss the final festivities and invitations to the grand opening/ribbon cutting event.

Now we are preparing for opening day! The ribbon cutting ceremony is scheduled for Wednesday, September 17th at 10:00 am at the East of the River Unity Health Center. The media is being invited along with City Council leaders, etc. I will be speaking on behalf of Design Scheme Interiors, LLC and the Decorators Alliance Project H.O.M.E. Stay tuned!

Project H.O.M.E. Jupiter, Florida by Kathy Peterson Inspired

Hi, it's Kathy Peterson here rolling along with Project H.O.M.E.! These fabrics were donated by my fellow designer friend, Amy Butler and the fabric has become the whole color inspiration for my first Project H.O.M.E. makeover helping 2 young women who are housed by a faith based organization called Village of Hope!
And the PUBLICITY is rolling in too!
LIFETIME TV:
Last week I taped a national TV segment about Project H.O.M.E. and D.A.N.A. on LIFETIME TV NETWORK TV series THE BALANCING ACT (a TV show I've co-hosted for 2 years!). The show airs M-F on Lifetime TV at 7 am ET/PT so be sure to watch. Project H.O.M.E. Air dates TBA--however---if you miss the PH air date you can catch on the web.

Tomorrow will be a busy publicity day as well! ABC-WPBF TV 25 will be doing an on-site news feature to air on July 25th.
NPR RADIO & PBS TV
And next Wednesday, I do a NATIONAL PUBLIC RADIO interview too! (links later) I'll also be doing an on-site TV segment with PBS WXEL very soon.
My original Project HOME took a turn of events due to some unforeseen circumstances however I'm up full steam now helping 2 young women who are ages 18 & 20. These young ladies are former foster kids who, in many instances, have no family or home to go to once the age out of foster care. Their situation really touched me so I rolled over my project to help them out
We've already begun our sewing projects for the bedrooms but we have a long way to go remaking the Kitchen, Bath and Living room and will be re-purposing used furniture using paints and fabrics! I'm also very excited that I'm able to bring more joy, empowerment, inspiration and COLOR into the lives of these 2 young ladies! They are so much fun to work with too!
More updates and air dates later!

Washington, DC Project H.O.M.E.- Art Consultants Collect School and Art Supplies to Support Unity East of the River Key Reading Corner Project

On Friday evening, June 6, 2008, Washington area women artists donated children's books, school and art supplies to support the Unity Health Care, East of the River, Key Reading Corner Project. At the "H3: The Remix" Art Exhibition Reception in Georgetown, Sharon Burton of Authentic Art Consulting and Michelle Parrish of the Thick Art Collaborative lead the call to invite artists to donate and the artists responded!

The Unity East of The River Health Care clinic seeks donations for reading books and back to school supplies for the children's Key Reading Corner as part of the larger Project H.O.M.E. redesign project. Children visiting the clinic will benefit from the supplies in preparation for back to school. The books will contribute to increasing literacy rates in an economically deprived community.

Special thanks to Authentic Art Consulting and The Thick Art Collaborative in joining the Washington DC Project H.O.M.E. in sponsoring the Key Corner Project!

Washington DC Project H.O.M.E. Presentation to Unity Health Care- May 28, 2008

"Now close your eyes! While I explain this relaxing sight. Envision new clients coming in to see the view. Not only do we hope it will inspire you, as you read. The young and the old will enjoy this visual excitement and relaxing vibe, while enjoying the peace and harmony. While waiting they can read and enjoy the day as they put all their fears and doubts away.

Now open your eyes. Internet information can be good but its nothing like researching it in a book. Artistically speaking, I will give you what you want. I'll give you what you need but first, we must begin to read..." By Bill Howard, Artist and Muralist, Ward 7 Arts Collaborative.

Greetings my friends. I, Sherry Ways, DC Project Coordinator of Project H.O.M.E. am back again to give you a brief synopsis of our meeting with our client, Unity Health Care East of the River.

On Wednesday, May 28th, I along with East of the River and artist, Bill Howard, met with several officials of the Unity Health Care system. Those in attendence were as follows: Naima Hashim- VIP Program Director, Audrey White- Director of Corporate and Community Relations, Jesse Langston- Health Center Director, East of the River, Bill Howard- Ward 7 Arts Collaborative Muralist and Tracey Harrison- Chief of Clinical Support.

We provided a slide show presentation of the design concept for the patient lobby area and the Key Reading Corner for children. The final mural concept was also unveiled for the wall.

The staff and officials of Unity Health Care were more than pleased with the results and approved of the overall design. In addition we were told of their are excitement about our involvement with the DANA Project H.O.M.E. Program! In addition, we have set a goal to complete the entire project by September 1st. We are going to also plan a ribbon cutting and interview with key stakeholders on the Design Scheme Interiors, LLC internet radio show "Inside Design" this fall on www.im4radiodc.com!

Other potential sponsors will be meeting with Unity Health Care officials and myself to discuss funding possibilities for the project within the next week. New sponsors will be announced on this blog as soon as they are confirmed. I just spoke to a book supplier today who will be donating 20 books towards the project in July or August this year!

Unity will begin to implement the design plan by first prepping the walls for the painting. Mr. Howard will then come in and draw a sketch and color plan for the mural. I will be meeting next week with the paint suppler, Eco-Green Living to order the paint colors. Painting could begin as early as the middle of June. Photos of the process will be documented as well as interviews with the artist and other participants!

Special thanks to Zandra Chestnut for photographing the presentation!

Things are moving quickly and we are excited about this truly collaborative effort!

Update: Washington, DC Project H.O.M.E.

Hi everyone! This is Sherry Ways of the Washington, DC Project H.O.M.E. and I am giving you the latest on our project the Unity Health Care East of the River Key Reading Corner Project.

Unity Health Care, Inc., The Ward 7 Arts Collaborative, Design Scheme Interiors, LLC (a private interior design firm in Washington, DC), and the Decorators’ Alliance of North America (DANA) are developing partnerships with local businesses to help brighten the lives of residents East of the River in Washington, DC through Unity Health Care’s East of the River Key Corner Project.

The Ward 7 Arts Collaborative (a non profit -501c3) is a group of artists, supporters, promoters, businesses, and nonprofit organizations who believe in the power of the arts to spiritually, physically, mentally and financially empower individuals and the East Washington, DC community. The mission of the Ward 7 Arts Collaborative is to foster awareness of, support for, and participation in the arts among community residents and visitors of all ages, and to preserve and enhance our local community's cultural and entertainment heritage.

For more than 20 years, Unity Health Care, Inc. (a non profit – 501c3) has provided health care and social services to the under/uninsured, homeless and working poor here in our nation’s capital. From humble beginnings as Health Care for the Homeless Project in 1985 – where a small group of doctors provided vital health care from the coatroom of a local school – to the largest provider of health care in the DC Metropolitan area with a staff of over 900 employees and 39 community health care systems, Unity now provides care for more than 80,000 DC residents every year.

The goal of Unity Health Care’s Key Corner Project is to combine pediatric literacy with pediatric care. To promote the importance of reading, volunteers, celebrity readers and other Partners in Caring, host routine reading and story telling circles in the waiting room area of Unity’s community health centers with the largest number of children in need of care.

To successfully renovate and redesign the Unity Health Care East of the River Key Corner, we need the following donations:

Environmentally friendly paint products
Lobby seating
Books for children ages 2-10
New backpacks and school supplies
Financial contributions- $500 and up

Businesses who sponsor this project with a donation of $5,000 or more will receive a one-year sponsorship of the Corner to include:

A formal unveiling of the corner (media opportunity)
A plaque presented to your company’s senior management team and/or board president
Volunteer opportunities for your company’s employees (hosting story time and reading circles at the Key Corner)
Your organization’s name mentioned in local press releases distributed to radio stations and newspapers
Your organization’s name on book bags and school supplies for more than 2,000 children returning to school in this challenged community within your nation’s capital
Your direct impact toward healing a vulnerable community and empowering the children who depend on Unity Health Care’s East of the River Health Center

With in-kind sponsorship through DANA, a visual artist from the Ward 7 Arts Collaborative, and my staff from Design Scheme Interiors, LLC we are seeking to turn this space into a stimulating, functional, universal and organized environment which will encourage the growth and development of the 2,000 children who visit the clinic for their well-child visits each year. This partnership will bring a message of beauty and hope to this struggling community through the creation of artistic and creative spaces. The Ward 7 Arts Collaborative and my firm, Design Scheme Interiors, LLC, will put our expertise in action as we redesign a beautiful and functional space. This space will establish an environment conducive to literacy and learning, and will also serve as a consistent reminder that there is a resource of hope and healing in the midst of this troubled community.

Well, to date with Tia Maxie as lead, we have selected all of our colors, materials, and the mural design that an artist Mr. William Howard from the Ward 7 Arts Collaborative in Washington, DC has conceptually designed for us. We also met with the new Unity Health Care East of the River Clinic Director, Jesse Langston and showed him preliminary design concepts. Mr. Langston has given us a preliminary thumbs up on the project.

In addition, we prepared a survey for the East of the River Unity Health Care Clinic to survey patients and their children about the colors, look and feel that they would like to see in the center. To date, we have created a color therapuetic palette to calm and relax patients and their children in the facility.

Audrey White the Unity Health Care Director of Community and Corporate Relations and I have drafed and approved a solicitation letter to garner inkind and corporate support for the project. The first group of letters were mailed on Friday, May 16th.

Regarding the current corporate sponsors that have agreed to donate needed materials and furniture for the Key Corner are as follows:

IKEA- College Park, Maryland Store
Eco-Green Living, an environmentally friendly store in Washington, DC

Eco-Green Living will be donating 10 gallons of Yolo Colorhouse Environmentally-Friendly paint. IKEA will be donating children's furniture for the reading corner.

In addition, two art consulting organizations will be soliciting arts materials and backpacks for the children. These organizations are Authentic Art Consulting and the ThickArt Collaborative. Both of these organizations will be co-sponsoring an exhibit entitled H3: Herstory: A Celebration of Women Artists during the months of June and July 2008 in Georgetown, Washington, DC. All participants and guests who will attend the opening reception, scheduled for Friday, June 6th, will be asked to bring children's books, arts materials and school backpacks in support of the Project H.O.M.E. Washington, DC Project.

I have asked my Public Relations Representative, Pauline Elmore, to begin to put together a series of press releases on the project to inform the broader community about what we are doing. I have asked her to be in touch with the national Project H.O.M.E. staff, the Unity Health Care representatives as well as key members and artists of the Ward 7 Arts Collaborative to interview them on various aspects of the project. The first press release will be sent out shortly.
After all sponsors have been solidified, we will be doing an article about their involvement as well.

This fall, my internet radio show, Inside Design, will interview all members of the project including Project H.O.M.E. national staff. This will be likely scheduled in October, after the project has been implemented and hopefully completed.

On Wednesday, May 21st, I along with my business partner Susan Schemm will be volunteering to read to those children visiting the Unity Health Care East of the River Center. This will provide those who work at the center and their families and opportunity to interact with my design firm and to demonstrate that we are involved in the community.

Lastly, On Wednesday, May 28th, my staff will be presenting the final design plan to the officials of the Unity Health Care Center, IKEA and the Ward 7 Washington, DC Councilperson, Yvette Alexander for approval.

Things are being to move quickly on this project. I will be back again to show you photos and a video of the presentation on May 28th.

Respectfully Submitted,

Project H.O.M.E. Jupiter, Florida

By Kathy Peterson Inspired

Now sit back, close your eyes and imagine -----one day you finally purchase your very first home. Then suddenly, 6 months later, you loose everything from fire and smoke. Everything, your furniture, clothing, computers......everything.

That's exactly what happened to a family of 6 in Jupiter, FL. Luckily, only 3 rooms were destroyed from the fire, but unfortunately, the AC unit was on and the heat and smoke from the flames came into every room melting mirrors and raising havock on all the walls, ceiling, and destroying furniture, etc.

Okay--so I have a big journey ahead of me, gathering sponsors for furniture, carpet, linens, ---you name it--- . But I know I can do it.

My project is a big blank slate. 9 rooms. Yes--9 rooms.
3 Bedrooms, Living room, Kitchen, Dining room, Home office, 2 baths and Foyer. But things are coming together as I've gathered about 10 national brands to lend their helping hand through product donations.

With the national outreach I've been doing, sponsors are coming in to help make over this family's home. Furniture will be the biggest challenge as 7 of the rooms need to be refurnished.

With the help of my friends from Jupiter First Church, we've been able to replace drywall, prime some of the walls to get the smoke out, and scrap the ceilings. But much more progess needs to be done.

I think next week I'll be able to gather the kids and help empower them by teaching them how to sew and craft decor for their rooms. The house finally has electricity so we'll be making colorful quilts for the 2 girls ages 16 & 15 ---thanks to my friend Amy Butler who is a fabulous fabric designer, then moving on to making window treatments, pillows and more. The 2 boys ages 14 & 6 are in store for a really hip room that promises to be the coolest on the block!

I'll keep you posted as time permits but I feel confident that I'll be able to pull the whole house together for a beautiful and cohesive look within the next few months-----making life just a little better for this deserving family.

FYI: Furniture and home accessory manufacturers! I need your help!

Akron update

It's Monday morning and I had the opportunity to spend time with my mom, my husband, & my son and his family over the past few days. It reminded me of the blessings I have and the importance of Project H.O.M.E. The Akron project will benefit children who cannot be with their families, and celebrate the couples who open their hearts to be family for these kids.

Our floor plan is complete and I'll be presenting it this week. The plan incorporates tons of storage for the many projects the girls create.

Our biggest challenge this week is to secure a wall storage system or a carpenter willing to make one for us.

Project H.O.M.E.- New Life Center, Phoenix, AZ

Hi Fellow DANA Members,

This is Deb Fahey of Maple Valley Interiors in Phoenix, AZ. My associates and I are working on a couple projects at New Life Center, a domestic violence shelter. The residents here, come at the last minutes' notice, gathering their children and leaving all their belongings behind. You can imagine that these women and children are so emotionally wrought that even the smallest everyday item is appreciated. But what is most needed is bedding. You see, as the residents leave the shelter to start a new life, they take the bedding with them, creating a bedding need for the next family that arrives. This occurs every 4 months as residents are only allowed to stay this long. In this 4 month period New Life Center gives them assistance and guidance to find a job and locate new housing, and prepares them emotionally to reenter the outside world. It is a wonderful thing that they do- SAVE LIVES!!!

New Life Center is in the process of expanding their facility, adding another 20 twin beds, providing shelter to 104 women and children at a time. Should you have in your possession twin size bedding - sheets, pillows, blankets, quilts, comforters... that you would like to donate or you know of a company that is interested in making a charitable donation of bedding, please contact me at deb@maplevalleyinteriors.com.

I wish you all success with your projects as well and hope that I may one day be able to return the favor.

Thank you,
Deb

Akron, OH Project H.O.M.E – We Are Underway!

DANA member, Sandra DeLong of Inviting Interiors, LLC and a group of community volunteers, has partnered with Shelter Care, a private, non-profit agency in her community. Shelter Care is a residential program for children, between the ages of 6 and 18, who manifest emotional, behavioral, or family adjustment problems. A continuum of residential care ranging from short-term crisis intervention, through intermediate or respite care, to long-term care in route to independent living, is the noteworthy contribution of Shelter Care to the community.

Shelter Care provides long-term residential treatment delivery through their Shelter Home Program. Each shelter home is staffed with a full-time, live-in married couple. The family model is designed to provide stability in the child’s life and to teach responsible living. Through the model of housing children in sheltered homes throughout the community, the kids are provided physical and emotional stability while they are taught responsible living.

My relationship with Shelter Care began after my meeting with their Executive Director, Mr. Wes Fair, PhD. Following my meeting, a Shelter Home project target was selected in Akron, Ohio. The choice of Akron was appropriate for the project because it will benefit the greatest number of girls! I discovered that all girls in the residential program live at my project residence on a rotating schedule. I think this will give our project great exposure!

At our Shelter Home, a brick Tudor style house, my target is their third floor TV/craft room. This expansive room has two dormers and a super quirky roof line.

My “must have” design elements include:
* seating for 6 to 8 people for conversation and TV /movie viewing
* areas for arts, crafts, sewing & quilting projects
* storage for all the supplies

My design will incorporate some built-in seating that doubles as storage. Storage is SO important because of the varied and numerous supplies needed for sewing, scrap booking, knitting, crocheting and jewelry making. I will be paying particular attention to scale, storage and being true to the architecture of our space.

Currently the project space is a cramped collection of unrelated items and lacks cohesive storage. Lighting is not conducive to the function of the space. The project goal is to design a comfortable well organized room where the girls who stay at this home can relax. I hope to create a sense of family and enhance developing social skills. Yes, I want to achieve all this while still allowing the girls to express their creativity and build confidence by crafting! To Climb Higher ... Dream Taller!

Shelter Care shares my lofty goals in their plans for children under their care. They want to promote establishment of achievable goals in the following areas: Personal growth, relationships family relationships, school and/or work adjustment, and a graceful, planned exit from the program.

My vision for this project is to provide a super space in which to advance Shelter Care’s objectives. I believe a person’s environment is as equally important to their self image as it is to their well being!

Currently, Inviting Interiors is finalizing the floor plan and developing a design board to be approved by Shelter Care. We hope to achieve necessary approvals soon.

Recently, I met three of the teens who live at the home and would benefit from this space improvement project! The young ladies provided valuable input on what they would like in the room. In expressing their ideas, it came across loud and clear that they felt honored that someone thought enough about them to give them such a gift. This was VERY reinforcing to my spirit!

Right now my Akron project home is greatly in need of furniture, built-in storage, flooring, lighting, and finish carpentry. For more information contact Sandra DeLong, DANA member, and owner of Inviting Interiors, LLC at invitinginteriors@neo.rr.com or 330-283-4114.

Washington DC Project H.O.M.E. Project- Under Way

Design Scheme Interiors, LLC, DANA Member Sherry Ways and her staff along with The Ward 7 Arts Collaborative is working in partnership with the Unity Health Care’s East of the River Health Center to improve literacy rates among children aged six months to five years old living in Ward 7 of Washington, DC. The clinic currently works in partnership with Reach Out and Read of Metropolitan DC to combine pediatric literacy with pediatric care. Artists from the Ward 7 Arts Collaborative, and designers from Design Scheme Interiors, will work together to turn the space in which the program operates into a stimulating, functional, universal and organized environment which will encourage the growth and development of the 2,000 children who visit the clinic for their well-child visits each year.

Currently, the project site is situated in the midst of a bustling waiting area of the health center. This presents challenges in effectively implementing the program. By creating a beautiful and functional space conducive to literacy and learning within the clinic’s walls, we hope to increase literacy among the children, ages six months to five years that visit the clinic each year.

Last year, Unity Health Care served more than 80,000 DC residents (over 18,000 were children), and approximately 2,000 children were served by their East of the River Health Center in Ward 7. The communities in which these children live are challenged by poverty, homelessness, poor education, unemployment, substance abuse, and an increasing number of new HIV/AIDS cases. However, Unity provides primary healthcare and supportive services to these residents through an outcomes-based community healthcare model, regardless of their ability to pay.

Information from the 2000 Census revealed that Ward 7 was second only to Ward 8 when it comes to the largest percentage of families (21.6%) and individuals (24.9%) living in poverty in the District. These wards are also home to a large percentage of children under the age of 18 (44,884 out of the District’s 114,992 children live in Wards 7 and 8). A 2007 article in the Washington Post revealed that the State of Adult Literacy Report found that Ward 7 had the highest percentage of residents over the age of 16 who were functionally illiterate (50.4%) (“Illiteracy Aid Found to Lag in District,” March 19, 2007, B01). Many of these individuals are the parents of the children served by Unity Health Care’s East of the River Health Center.

Through "green" design, combined with early learning and child care design, a visually creative learning space will be achieved for children ages six months- five years old. Through design, art and education pediatric literacy will thrive in a vibrant, stimulating space designed for, around and about children. Quiet and manipulative play will be achieved through division and space planning.
Currently, Design Scheme Interiors, LLC is developing the conceptual portion of the project. Preliminary space planning, colors, mural concept and furniture selections have been made. A design board to be presented to officials at Unity Health Care and the Ward 7 Arts Collaborative is currently being developed. A presentation of the plan will be made in June.
The DC Project Home/Unity Health Care Project is in need of the following donations of environmentally friendly paint products, lobby seating, environmentally friendly rugs, books for children ages- 2-10, environmentally-friendly children's furniture and volunteers are needed to implement the project this summer. In addition, any monetary donations will be welcomed. All who donate will be formally honored with a plaque with your name or company on it. The plaque will be permanently placed in the space as an adopted sponsor of the Unity Health Care Center's reading corner.
